Week 10

Subjunctive isn't fun for anyone, not even Spaniards themselves.  If they had to go back and understand why they speak with the certain tenses they do, I honestly think they would have just as much trouble as we do.  Relearning ESCAPA and WEDDING and what not doesn't bring back pretty memories of the reasons why I chose to study Spanish, but more like raises more complications on what it is I know and what I'm learning.  Honestly, with all the rules it makes me feel as if I won't ever be fluent.  As I stated in a previous blog, subjunctive and grammar is like a math problem you don't remember the equations to.

It also raises the question, which language is more complicated to understand.  I think English is easy to learn, but hard to pronounce.  When writing it can be simple "I walk, you walk, she walks, we walk, y'all walk, they walk"  It's all the same!  Yet looking at pronunciation it's all different, making words hard to understand.  With Spanish, I am able to pronounce the words and notice the comparison among other words.  For example, when I first learned the word umbrella - "paraguas" you can see para which is similar to "for" and aguas for "water" therefore you can put two and two together and understand the meaning behind a word.  It's not as easy when it comes to English, yet at the same time, my foreign exchange student from Brazil learned English in months while I've been working for 10 years and still don't feel fluent.

Aunque este pin no es en español es sobre cultura.  Lo encontré en el board de Doctora de Global Citizens.  Me llamó la atención porque tenía un estudiante extranjero de Brasil, así que yo sé el primer gesto.  Pero también me gusta porque es las cosas de bajo de los idiomas.  Esto es la razón porque yo estudio español y estudios internacionales.  Lo que pienso de este artículo es que en los estados unidos no tenemos muchísimos gestos.  Por ejemplo solamente como "OK" o "Rock on."  No son cosas como Europa que tiene más en un gesto - como el matrimonio de una pareja.  También mi familia tenía un un estudiante extranjero de Vietnam.  Así que yo aprendí sobre el gesto de salir en los Estados Unidos.  Mi estudiante hizo este gesto para decir venga.

El artículo en la derecha es también uno de cultura.  También son cosas que yo pensaba mientras estaba en España.  Me encanta que en España, los impuestos son en el precio.  Nunca he pensado sobre la medicina y que hay anuncios sobre las que necesitan una prescripción.  Me encanta número 9 porque cuando estaba en México, mi hermano allí amaba la frase "oh really."  El sabía poco ingles pero siempre usó "oh really? really really?"

Lo siento doctora por mis pins escogidos.  Yo sé que no son en español pero como yo mencioné en mi parte de ingles, hay mucho que está debajo de las lenguas.  Cuando yo visité Costa Rica, mi primera estudio extranjero con estudios nunca he pensado sobre muchísimas cosas que yo aprendí.

Week 9

This past week in class we have been working on our own short stories in the past tense.  The one struggle I had was that I automatically wanted to write in nosotros form, but I made my story written in 3rd person, therefore several times throughout my writing, I went back and fixed my verb conjugation.  Aside from that, I enjoyed writing the story.  I think the length was just the right amount to where we were not stressed, which I greatly appreciate - Gracias Doctora!  For my story I incorporated various cartoons that I used to watch as a kid.  The Magic School Bus was the first cartoon that I introduced to the story.  As cheesy as the show was, it was great to watch in class, almost as good as Bill Nye.  The next character I introduced was Eliza Thornberry.  I loved this show and it makes me laugh to see the show now.  When writing my story I went back to recall my memory, and it's interesting to see the shows 10 years later.  Eliza lead us to some camels.  Next we found Dexter, from Dexter's Laboratory.  Originally this part of my story - the one that Jemma edited - was in a different direction than I ended up with.  This rose a small issue, solely because I wanted to incorporate more characters, but the more characters and action I had in the story, the less descriptive the story itself was.  Therefore I changed it and took out Scooby-Doo. The last group of characters I have in the story is the PowerPuff Girls.  As a fun fact - they recently added the PowerPuff Girls and Magic School Bus to Netflix!  Back to my story, Jemma helped with my decision to take out some parts of my story because she mentioned it felt like it was moving very fast - this was the best advice I received from the peer-editing. 


With regards to the story I read by Maya, it was a very nice, short story that got right to the point while giving some suspicion.  It was about two gemelos, or twins, who turned out to be sirens in the end, but were both unlike anyone in their towns in Cuba.  Due to this, they ended feeling a connection to each other, which is why one of them traveled to the other side of Cuba to travel with his mother and felt a need to go to the ocean, which was both him and his twin sisters favorite place.  This is where they met and walked into the sea in the end.  I liked her use of repetition the most to show how the twins were connected, but I mentioned to her that she should use more transition words to help the story flow.

Cuando escribí mi cuento, pensé en dibujos animados españoles.  Cuando estaba en Costa Rica, mi hermana tica miraba Dora the Explorer cada mañana.. fue un poco raro porque en los Estados Unidos, Dora es para aprender español, pero allí todo el programa fue en español, así que todavía no entiendo el punto.  Cuando busqué pinturas de Dora en español, yo encontré este foto, que de nunca he pensado.  ExploraDORA es donde Dora tiene su nombre.


Otra cosa que me gusta es el Buzzfeed Tamarindo sobre cosas españolas.  Yo encontré un articulo sobre la comida.  Aunque es en ingles, pienso que es bueno por mi blog porque significa la cultura.  El articulo se llama "An Open Letter to the Taquero, The Greatest Human in the World."  Tiene 15 puntos sobre el Taquero.  Lo que me gusta más es el punto sobre los carnes diferentes.  Me encanta pastor, pero solamente puedo tener en México o Frontera porque otros restaurantes no tienen lo mismo especie.  

Pero cuando estaba en México, yo traté alambres, que son como fajitas pero un poco más desordenados.  
Me encanta ls comida del calle porque tiene muchísimo sabor!  Mira el queso, tocino, cebollas, limón verde y todo. Que riquísimo!  Son las cosas pequeñas que son mejores.  
  

Week 8

On Monday we took a short quiz over preterite and imperfect, which as I recall I believe I got them all right.  After turning in the quiz, we received Harry Potter, the Spanish version.  I have never read the original version, but have heard great things.  Surprisingly, although reading the story in Spanish, I could still tell by the writing style that I would like the book, whether in Spanish or English.  The hardest part when reading was to not look up the meaning behind some of the vocabulary.  When reading over the first few pages, I had to force myself to keep reading and it came together in my head.  I was able to get the gist of what was happening.


Another problem I came across was reading and understanding simultaneously.  I can read Spanish and I can understand Spanish, but when it is a lengthy amount to read, I find myself focusing on my pronunciation and speaking more than understanding what exactly I am reading.  this goes with English as well.  In a previous blog, I mentioned my weakness of reading comprehension, which goes in hand with these problems as well. _________________________________________________________________________________


El cuento que yo leí se llamaba El Rey Rana.  Nunca he visto la película de Disney, y por eso yo quería leerlo.  Yo escogí de leerlo en lo mismo forma de Harry Potter, como leímos en clase.  Cuando yo encontré palabras que nunca he visto, me salté por encima de ellos.  Mientras el cuento no tenía tantas palabras difíciles como Harry Potter, todavía hay palabras que no sabía.  Otra diferencia entre los dos historias era los descriptores.  En Harry Potter, había más descriptores por las primeras paginas, pero con El Rey Rana es solamente en la primera párrafo.  Luego, cambió en acción, el segundo párrafo.  Este es porque el cuento es más corto, así que necesita inicia más rápido.  También es porque el forma del texto.

El Rey Rana empezó con una princesa, la más menor de de las princesas.  Ella fue al bosque en su lugar favorito pero perdió su pelota.  Cuando estaba llorando, oyó una voz preguntando qué pasó.

Week 7

This past week we studied Juan José.  I've never been good with vocabulary in the past, especially with reading.  I love reading independently but when given a book or play to read, I rarely am able to understand it.  Therefore, when it comes to Spanish literature, I get extremely nervous.  Juan José was most definitely hard for me to understand, and it did not help that some of the words were also slang.  Thankfully, we were also given the English version which most definitely helped with understanding the play.  It had all the components of the most well known themes for movies, plays, books, and more: love, jealousy, gossip, violence, etc.  With regards to the ending, I did not expect Rose to die but everyone likes an unexpected ending.

The first chapter for this week was based on de and que.  It came much easier than expected and I only got about 3 - 5 spaces wrong.  Specifically number 6, I was curious as to why the second spot was de.  Yo leí más de la mitad - if you read more than the majority (half), I thought it would be que.

The next chapter I was also working pretty well on but three problems arose.  Numbers 5, 9, and 10.  Number 5 I was curious why the word was de, rather than a.  Mi hermano siempre me ríe de mí - if you would like to say always laughs at me, I would think a would be the right pronoun.  If de is used, I thought it would be more like from me, laughing from something.


The objet problems came east for me throughout the exercise as well as the gustar verb with indirect objects.  The last chapter however, chapter 43 was a review on por and para.  This was most definitely a review that I was not looking forward to.  I could remember a lot of them just because any blank before an infinitive automatically yields para.  Also, it was easy with some phrases, such as por eso, por lo menos, etc.  I believe por also always goes in front of mí and so on.

Hace cinco años, mi familia y yo teníamos una estudiante extranjera de Brasil por un año que se llama Hanny Caroline Cunha, pero para nosotros - Carol.  Cuando se duración en los Estados Unidos terminó, mi hermana y yo fuimos con Carol a Brasil para tres semanas.  Llegamos en Sao Paolo, pero teníamos un vuelo más a su ciudad - Presidente Prudente.  Cuando llegamos, el aeropuerto estaba lleno de su familia y amigos.  Ellos tenían señales con fotos de mi familia con la palabra obrigado, que significa gracias.  Todos nos abrazaron y besaron en las mejillas.  Era un momento inolvidable.  Nunca he sentido amor como esto.  Ellos nunca habían visto antes.  Después del aeropuerto, todo el mundo fue a una casa que ellos habían alquilado para festejar.  Bailamos y comimos por todo el noche y claro conocimos muchísima gente.

En otras noticias, yo encontré un BuzzFeed española.  En este video, una mujer está tratando de encontrar una taquería y durante el video, puedes oír que está cambiando su voz para sonar más "gringa."

Otro video que me gusta es sobre michelada.  Cuando estaba in México yo traté una variación de esto pero solamente estaba en el borde de la copa.  En este video es una bebida con cerveza, Worcestershire, polvo de chile, maggi, salsa picante, y jugo de lima y limón.  En el video, algunas americanas trataron michelada por la primera vez.


Esto no era en línea pero yo estoy en la clase de márketing internacional y en una párrafo en el libro habla sobre los idiomas en países diferentes que hablan español pero no tienen las mismas palabras.  Por ejemplo, jugo de naranja en México es zumo de naranja en España.  Este es un problema grande cuando está tratando de vender cosas con promoción y también para investigar.  Pero cuando estaba en España el zumo de naranja es fresco y es maravillosa!
