Week 13

On Monday of this week we read over two articles that were about controversial halloween costumes, for example the outfit from Vanity Fair of Caitlyn Jenner.  There has been much controversy over Caitlyn Jenner in general.  To be honest, Gemma and I got very off topic and ended up talking more about the controversy of trans-people and the culture of all of the sexual varieties.  It was a pretty interesting conversation and we figured out we have the same views on the topics.

Personally, for Halloween I lean away from anything controversial.  This year I went with a Mario outfit... pretty typical.  A friend of mine was Luigi so we had the complete outfit.

Wednesday of the week we had class on the third floor - thanks to leg day this was a bit painful.  I did like the classroom setup because it was more conversational and such.  Luckily, we used this day to review various questions from our grammar evaluation.  The most anxiety I had over this eval was that the majority of our answers had multiple answers - therefore when graded I got a C, but in reality it was an A.  But it can be extremely irritating, exhausting, confusing, and much more that the questions have so many answers because it's hard to understand all of them, especially when I don't understand Señora's arrow map.

I would also like to apologize for this late blog post.  Although this may not be all that good for you, I felt much better about the fact that I was only 1 behind, not counting the lowest blog dropped.  In all, I have really enjoyed this class because it helped me to understand a lot more about grammar with Spanish.  This was the first time I have ever written a Spanish paper and paid so much attention to transitions and really wrote a research paper rather than just an informative paper.

Cita

Me gusta este cita porque pienso que es bueno para este semana de finales.  Aunque todos los estudiantes están estudiando o escribiendo papeles, como esta clase.  Aunque es una semana difícil, piensa en lo que está bueno.  Para mí es que recibí un internship y tengo más que pensar que mis exámenes.  Aunque la universidad y escuela es muy importante, yo tengo una GPA muy bueno y mi educación ha sido recompensada.

En mis blogs del pasado, tenía posts de BuzzFeed, aquí está un post sobre razones porque necesitas beber más vino.  Me gusta estos artículos en ingles y nunca he leído uno en español.  La foto abajo es mi favorito del post porque es muy bonita con las luces y todo.  
Pero me encanta que número 4 se refiere a calimcho, o kalimotso que es vino con coca cola.  Es una bebida típica de los Sanfermines.  Cuando estaba en Madrid, traté esto y fue mejor que pensaba.  Con la carbonatación y el sabor del vino, es perfecto.  
Otro artículo que encontré es sobre cosas que son mejores cuando una persona no quiere cocinar.  Ese foto es de un sartén triple.  Es una idea magnífica porque cuando yo cociné pasta, me encanta cocinar hongos, pollo, y algunas bases brócoli.  Si yo puedo cocinar todo en una vez, pienso que va a ser más rápido y beneficio.

Week 12

Throughout the week we have continued to practice subjunctive.  It seems like it never ends.  Outside of class I have continued to think of my research paper.  I have a few options that intrigue me but it's hard to figure out which I'd prefer to work on, specifically because the availability of data.  I want to choose a topic that I am able to find a lot of information while also still enjoying what I'm learning.  I have always been the kind of person that gravitates toward culture, specifically cultural differences.  It intrigues me to learn about this, which is also why I researched the International Hospitality masters program at the University of South Carolina.  I have enjoyed the cultural aspects of different countries, different families, and different regions.  When it comes to my paper, I am leaning towards the studies of various festivals and how they reflect on the different cultures of Spanish-speaking countries.

Some of the festivals I have found:

Kite Festival

Guatemala Kite Festival - I actually heard about this for the first time from class.  Turns out this is a part of the celebration for Día de los Muertos.

San Antero

The San Antero Donkey Festival takes place in Colombia.  This is a festival where they decorate donkeys with clothing as well as make-up.

El Colacho

Spain El Colacho - this is a festival I found that is literally about men jumping over babies.







These are the strangest festivals I've found around the world.  It's almost tempting to solely focus on Spain because of the various different festivals they have in different parts of the country.  For example, if you take a look at this website, you'll see 10 of the most bizarre festivals in Spain, one of them being El Colacho.

Ahora es el tiempo de otoño.  Estoy pensando en las decoraciones de los estados unidos, y mientras estaba pensando, pensó sobre las decoraciones de España e otros países.  Encontré este foto de Sagrada Familia.  Que maravillosa!  Los colores son magnificos.  Esto es lo que ellos se hacen para navidad.  Cuando busco fotos con las palabras "España otoño" encontré más fotos con hojas de muchos colores.  El foto a la izquierda es de Toledo, una ciudad medieval.  Cuando mira a los colores de los edificios con las hojas, se complementan muy bien.  Después de mirando los fotos de otoño, empecé de pensando sobre la comida de otoño.  Estoy curioso si la comida gira alrededor de las calabazas como aquí.  Busca con las palabras "México otoño comida."  No hay tanta comida con calabaza.  Hay sopa como copa de tortilla.  Hay recetas con frijoles y maíz, el maíz es similar a los Estados Unidos.  Pero también, hay flan con calabaza.  A mí, no me gusta flan, también no me gusta calabaza. 

Week 11

In class last week we went over subjunctive, which I hate.  I feel like it would be much easier without knowing English because every time we conjugate, we get into a large argument/discussion all about what it means in English and why it means that and the best way to conjugate the Spanish verbs.  When you put it all into an English/Spanish perspective I think it makes things too complicated.  We aren't familiar with these conjugations in English, which leads me to believe that we shouldn't look at this vocabulary like that.  We can't keep using English as a fall back, we have to stick it in our minds that this way is the right way, like math, it's all an equation.   

For my participation in class, I am happy to ask questions but when one problem is taken into several different problems that I didn't even understand the links too, I get overwhelmed.  I am not overwhelmed by what it is we're talking about in class, but the conversations we begin to talk about, when speaking of subjunctive and random vocab words we haven't even discussed.  Yes I may no Spanish, but by no means am I linguist.  Therefore I am not concerned with the complete reasons behind every little word and conjugation.  I do not mean this to sound like an insult, I just feel as if one student's motivation is not equivalent to the rest of the class, causing us to stay on one point that only one person is participating in.  I think this is more an act of understanding, whereas the rest of the class is unaware of what is really going on, not being incompetent but not understanding of the linguistic reasons behind it all.

El primer artículo que yo leí se llama Gobierno de México anuncia que Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán resultó herido al huir de un operativo de captura.  La primera cosa que yo miré solamente mirando el artículo es que hay muchas fotos.  El según artículo se llama El tuit que aumentó el misterio sobre dónde está Joaquín 'el Chapo' Guzmán.  Tiene un video pero no hay fotos.  Hay una introducción sobre un tuit que tiene una foto del fugitivo.  Empieza con imaginación diciendo que si eres un narcotráfico, que harías?  Me encanta este frase en total porque te hace de pensar.  Aunque es un sitio de CNN, pienso que es informal porque está hablando de un tuit puedo también es sobre una foto que es posible que sea el Chapo.  Siguiendo de hablar sobre las personas entre el cartel y el dinero.  El primer artículo es de BBC, otro sitio de noticias.  Las palabras y letras son más grande.  Describe como el gobierno está planeando de resolver el problema del Chapo.  Es más formal sobre las personas en el gobierno, mientras el otro tiene más de escepticismo.  Por todo el artículo, hay más links a otros artículos sobre el Chapo.  Después de los dos artículos, yo aprendí que los Estados Unidos está recompensando personas quien sabe sobre el Chapo.  También hay un controversia sobre lo que pasó. 

En otras noticias, yo encuentro un artículo sobre las princesas de Disney.  Es pertinente porque el título del artículo tiene un si clause: Si la princesas de Disney fueran Argentinas.  Es un artículo muy interesante con pinturas de las princesas.  Puedes ver también la cultura entre las fotos.  Me gusta la de Blanca Nieves sobre los piqueteros, que son personas en Argentina quien pelea sobre algunas cosas diferentes de la sociedad.  El otro que me gusta es Tiana con una empanada.  Me encantan empanadas, pero no ha tomado en algunos años. 

Week 10

Subjunctive isn't fun for anyone, not even Spaniards themselves.  If they had to go back and understand why they speak with the certain tenses they do, I honestly think they would have just as much trouble as we do.  Relearning ESCAPA and WEDDING and what not doesn't bring back pretty memories of the reasons why I chose to study Spanish, but more like raises more complications on what it is I know and what I'm learning.  Honestly, with all the rules it makes me feel as if I won't ever be fluent.  As I stated in a previous blog, subjunctive and grammar is like a math problem you don't remember the equations to.

It also raises the question, which language is more complicated to understand.  I think English is easy to learn, but hard to pronounce.  When writing it can be simple "I walk, you walk, she walks, we walk, y'all walk, they walk"  It's all the same!  Yet looking at pronunciation it's all different, making words hard to understand.  With Spanish, I am able to pronounce the words and notice the comparison among other words.  For example, when I first learned the word umbrella - "paraguas" you can see para which is similar to "for" and aguas for "water" therefore you can put two and two together and understand the meaning behind a word.  It's not as easy when it comes to English, yet at the same time, my foreign exchange student from Brazil learned English in months while I've been working for 10 years and still don't feel fluent.

Aunque este pin no es en español es sobre cultura.  Lo encontré en el board de Doctora de Global Citizens.  Me llamó la atención porque tenía un estudiante extranjero de Brasil, así que yo sé el primer gesto.  Pero también me gusta porque es las cosas de bajo de los idiomas.  Esto es la razón porque yo estudio español y estudios internacionales.  Lo que pienso de este artículo es que en los estados unidos no tenemos muchísimos gestos.  Por ejemplo solamente como "OK" o "Rock on."  No son cosas como Europa que tiene más en un gesto - como el matrimonio de una pareja.  También mi familia tenía un un estudiante extranjero de Vietnam.  Así que yo aprendí sobre el gesto de salir en los Estados Unidos.  Mi estudiante hizo este gesto para decir venga.

El artículo en la derecha es también uno de cultura.  También son cosas que yo pensaba mientras estaba en España.  Me encanta que en España, los impuestos son en el precio.  Nunca he pensado sobre la medicina y que hay anuncios sobre las que necesitan una prescripción.  Me encanta número 9 porque cuando estaba en México, mi hermano allí amaba la frase "oh really."  El sabía poco ingles pero siempre usó "oh really? really really?"

Lo siento doctora por mis pins escogidos.  Yo sé que no son en español pero como yo mencioné en mi parte de ingles, hay mucho que está debajo de las lenguas.  Cuando yo visité Costa Rica, mi primera estudio extranjero con estudios nunca he pensado sobre muchísimas cosas que yo aprendí.

Week 9

This past week in class we have been working on our own short stories in the past tense.  The one struggle I had was that I automatically wanted to write in nosotros form, but I made my story written in 3rd person, therefore several times throughout my writing, I went back and fixed my verb conjugation.  Aside from that, I enjoyed writing the story.  I think the length was just the right amount to where we were not stressed, which I greatly appreciate - Gracias Doctora!  For my story I incorporated various cartoons that I used to watch as a kid.  The Magic School Bus was the first cartoon that I introduced to the story.  As cheesy as the show was, it was great to watch in class, almost as good as Bill Nye.  The next character I introduced was Eliza Thornberry.  I loved this show and it makes me laugh to see the show now.  When writing my story I went back to recall my memory, and it's interesting to see the shows 10 years later.  Eliza lead us to some camels.  Next we found Dexter, from Dexter's Laboratory.  Originally this part of my story - the one that Jemma edited - was in a different direction than I ended up with.  This rose a small issue, solely because I wanted to incorporate more characters, but the more characters and action I had in the story, the less descriptive the story itself was.  Therefore I changed it and took out Scooby-Doo. The last group of characters I have in the story is the PowerPuff Girls.  As a fun fact - they recently added the PowerPuff Girls and Magic School Bus to Netflix!  Back to my story, Jemma helped with my decision to take out some parts of my story because she mentioned it felt like it was moving very fast - this was the best advice I received from the peer-editing. 


With regards to the story I read by Maya, it was a very nice, short story that got right to the point while giving some suspicion.  It was about two gemelos, or twins, who turned out to be sirens in the end, but were both unlike anyone in their towns in Cuba.  Due to this, they ended feeling a connection to each other, which is why one of them traveled to the other side of Cuba to travel with his mother and felt a need to go to the ocean, which was both him and his twin sisters favorite place.  This is where they met and walked into the sea in the end.  I liked her use of repetition the most to show how the twins were connected, but I mentioned to her that she should use more transition words to help the story flow.

Cuando escribí mi cuento, pensé en dibujos animados españoles.  Cuando estaba en Costa Rica, mi hermana tica miraba Dora the Explorer cada mañana.. fue un poco raro porque en los Estados Unidos, Dora es para aprender español, pero allí todo el programa fue en español, así que todavía no entiendo el punto.  Cuando busqué pinturas de Dora en español, yo encontré este foto, que de nunca he pensado.  ExploraDORA es donde Dora tiene su nombre.


Otra cosa que me gusta es el Buzzfeed Tamarindo sobre cosas españolas.  Yo encontré un articulo sobre la comida.  Aunque es en ingles, pienso que es bueno por mi blog porque significa la cultura.  El articulo se llama "An Open Letter to the Taquero, The Greatest Human in the World."  Tiene 15 puntos sobre el Taquero.  Lo que me gusta más es el punto sobre los carnes diferentes.  Me encanta pastor, pero solamente puedo tener en México o Frontera porque otros restaurantes no tienen lo mismo especie.  

Pero cuando estaba en México, yo traté alambres, que son como fajitas pero un poco más desordenados.  
Me encanta ls comida del calle porque tiene muchísimo sabor!  Mira el queso, tocino, cebollas, limón verde y todo. Que riquísimo!  Son las cosas pequeñas que son mejores.
