Week 2

This week in class we studied ser/estar.  The most beneficial part to studying abroad is speaking, and because of this I feel pretty comfortable using ser/estar because I know what sounds and feels right.  Although I hate to use the word fluent to describe my language proficiency, this is an instance where I might be able to say that because I am fluent I can tell the difference between the two verbs and understand when to use them.  Although there are a few problems I had in class, such as ser/estar rico, I still believe I know the verbs pretty well.

In the homework for this week we studied the difference between feminine and masculine words, specifically adjectives and adverbs.  In the first chapter I remembered one of the sayings a previous teacher in high school taught us.  This saying specifies for masculine words ending in -ma, the saying is simply "ma-ma-ma-masculine" just to remember that any words ending in -ma is going to masculine, such as problema.

Chapter 19 was a bit harder for me to do because of the demonstrativos, I think I could use some more practice with these and difference between este, ese, esto, eso.  On the other hand, chapters 20, 21, 22 came easy to me.  23 was a bit harder, but 24 is where I was stumped for awhile trying to figure out the difference between el mío and lo mío. Also in this chapter I had trouble differentiating de ellos from suyos.  Chapter 27 was a review from class, which was definitely helpful to have reviewed everything when doing the exercises.

In class this week I'm looking forward to reviewing some more grammatical errors that I have and correcting them.  I am hoping to have more conversational practice so that I am able to correct my grammar errors through speech.  That is more of a weakness for me than my writing because I don't have as much time to think about what I'm saying.

Cuando estaba en mis clases de español en el colegio, tenía una profesora que cada semana nos enseñó otro dicho de la vida española.  Este puesto de pinterest, me recuerdo de este clase.  Hay dos que son mis favoritos.  Uno de esos es número 3 "mucho ayuda el que no estrada" porque es similar a lo de ingles "you're a better door than a window."  Es un poco diferente de contexto pero me gustalo.  El segundo dicho favorito es número 5 "calladita te ves más bonita" porque es muy descarado.  Si una amiga o amigo de yo dijo algo un poco estúpido o extraño, alguien dice "es una cosa buena que eres bonita.

Me gusta el tweet de Profesora McGrath que es sobre palabras españolas que necesitamos adoptar en ingles.  Me gusta porque es nuevo vocabulario pero también porque hay palabras únicas.  Mis palabras favoritas son pagafuntas, guiri, y entrecejo.  Me gusta pagafuntas porque es muy extraño, también como entrecejo.  Guiri es interesante porque cuando estaba en España, no la oí.

Cuando estaba leyendo otro link de Profesora McGrath sobre nuevas palabras por RAE, yo ví la palabra frikis.  Yo aprendí este palabra cuando estaba en España que significa un tipo de persona que es extravaganza y raro.  Pienso que es similar a la palabra en ingles de emo.  Otra palabra que aprendí es kinder que es un tipo de chocolate como nestle que es magnífico. Cuando estaba en España hay sabores de kinder que son gelatos.  También es cómico que tuiteares una palabra ahora.

Week 1

The first day of class got me excited for the semester to come.  I have already take Doctora McGrath once in the past and the structure of her classes has always helped me to learn more due to the conversational aspect.  With that being said, with the social media used in this particular course, I am looking forward to the vocabulary learned.  In the past, I have wanted to study slang and vocabulary words on a more conversational level and I'm hoping through this course I will be able to learn these.

With the online homework, when reviewing the stresses of the words, I was surprised to find out that I was not as familiar with the accent marks as I had thought.  After some practice, I was able to get it down better than earlier.  I enjoyed the review for the homework because my weakness with Spanish is my grammar.  Although I can write and speak Spanish well, when I am speaking I speak so fast that I'm not thinking about my grammar and tenses.  Another weak point for me is vocabulary but solely in certain situations, which is why I do not feel comfortable saying I am fluent due to the fact that I would not be able to translate completely.  I'm hoping to overcome some of these weaknesses this semester.

The vocabulary that we have learned so far has a focus on Spanish speaking countries.  I had already learned about Ticos, which are natives of Costa Rica.  We also learned how to say upper case and lower case, which after being reminded the words, I remembered the keyboard in Spain this past summer with May. on one key for the upper case.  I also learned about D.F. last summer when I traveled to Mexico City.

Este tweet fue un poco difícil para traducir porque el vocabulario.  Cuando yo busqué la definición de "arrancar," se dice "to pull of, to tear off, snatch" pero la traducción de todo el Tweet dice "The parties will not boot. Plants, cars and unforeseen things are torn off... But the parties, no. #FacédemeCasiñoHo :D" Por eso, estoy confundido porque el vocabulario y las palabras son un poco extraño y no es cómo pensaba. Es posible que es una frase común en el mundo hispánico que yo no sabía.

Lo que era intrigante para mí de este Tweet fue la dificultad del vocabulario española es que hay muchos significados de diferentes palabras y unos que no son muy claros. Por ejemplo, cuando estaba aprendiendo español, siempre había confundido con la palabra "preocupar" porque parece la palabra "preocuppied" en ingles, pero en realidad es una definición muy diferente.

Me gusta este puesto de Pinterest no solamente porque no me gustan los lunes y me encanta comida, pero también porque tiene condicional. A mí, no me gustan los tensos, es lo más difícil cosa para estar cómoda de decir. No es porque no puedo conjugar los verbos, es que cuando estoy hablando, no tengo tiempo para usar todos los diferentes tensos y no sé en cuál situaciones yo necesita usarlos.

Este puesto es sobre gramática, otra cosa que no me gusta.  Yo era un estudiante de diseño gráfico, y por eso me gustan imágenes con colores y todo, como este puesto o foto.  Por eso pienso que va a ser muy utilizado para mí porque es bueno por la gramática.
